Installation of a Commercial Geothermal Heat Pump

Geothermal HVAC systems are types of heat pumps—they remove heat from inside a building or bring heat into it and can easily switch the direction they operate to go from one mode to another. Having a commercial geothermal system installed is an investment in comfort all around the year.

The big difference between a geothermal heat pump and a conventional heat pump (a.k.a. ground-source heat pump and an air-source heat pump) is that the geothermal heat pump uses the ground as a heat exchanger medium rather than the air. Refrigerant loops buried more than 6 or 10 feet below the surface allow the heat pump to access the steady temperature there, both to retrieve heat and as a heat sink to deposit it.

How a Geothermal Heat Pump Can Be Beneficial

What is the advantage of using the earth for heat exchange rather than air? The main advantage is that it’s more energy efficient. And air source heat pump must use more energy to pump heat to the outside when in cooling mode because the air outside is already hot. In heating mode, it must draw heat from outside when the air is colder. A geothermal system always has access to a steady temperature below ground that makes it more efficient (from 4 to 6 times more efficient) at releasing and absorbing heat. You’ll spend less money each year keeping your business climate-controlled with a geothermal system.

Geothermal heat pumps have other benefits: they create fewer emissions, have a reduced number of repair needs, and their loops can last for more than 50 years. Geothermal systems will also lower a building’s carbon footprint.
