5 Things You’re Doing Wrong with Your AC

Are you taking proper care of your AC? Many homeowners have no idea how to answer when asked this question. Some people (unfortunately) never even think about their AC unless there is a problem.

However, if you want to enjoy air conditioning in Orlando, FL, there are a few things you should be doing to maintain your system. Let’s look at 5 things that you are probably doing wrong and prepare to be amazed at how much more efficiently your system runs when you start doing them right!

1. You’re Leaving the Filter in Too Long

Did you know that you’re supposed to change your AC filter at least once every three months? If you use your system constantly, you should actually change it even more often — maybe even as frequently as once a month.

Dirty filters cause your system to work harder, meaning it uses up more energy and wears out faster.

2. You Don’t Have a Programmable Thermostat

How often is your AC unit running when nobody is home? Probably a lot of the time if you don’t have a programmable thermostat.

With one of these devices installed, you don’t have to remember to turn the AC off every time you leave the house. Instead, you can set the thermostat to the temperature you want during the hours you are usually home. The rest of the time, the unit will allow the temperature to rise because you aren’t home to be sweating anyway.

3. You’re Not Using Your Fans

Many people just flip on the AC and forget about other cooling devices around the home. However, other fans throughout the home can help circulate the cool air, reducing the need for the AC to be blasting.

4. You’re Letting the Sun Stream In

Sunshine is awesome, but not when it is beating down on your house and pouring in your windows on a 95-degree day.

That sunlight is bringing lots of heat with it and causing your system to work harder to cool your house. Give your AC a hand and cover the windows on the sunny side of your house with drapes or blinds. You’ll be cooler, your furniture will fade less, and your AC will work more efficiently — everybody wins!

5. Not Servicing Your AC

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” might sound like good advice but it’s actually bad advice when it comes to your AC. To keep your system running efficiently (and for many years) you should service it at least once a year.

You can do this yourself by following a helpful YouTube video. Or you can call a professional and you don’t even have to give up a Saturday afternoon!
