Tips for Boosting AC Energy Efficiency in Summer

There are so many ways to save money on your cooling costs during the summer. The best thing about boosting AC energy efficiency is that you enjoy a variety of benefits. Aside from saving money, you also lighten the load on your unit and give it a chance to cool your home more effectively and last longer.

If you need AC maintenance in Winter Springs, give our team a call to schedule service. Then keep reading to learn more about the steps you can complete as a homeowner to improve energy efficiency and reap the benefits of a cool, comfortable home all summer long without breaking the bank.

Increase the Temperature Settings

We know that feeling cool in the hottest months of summer is a priority, so it seems like lowering the thermostat temperature is the way to go. Raising the temperature above what you’re used to may not be something you want to do.

But when it comes to boosting energy efficiency, adjusting even a few degrees up can save you money on your energy costs for cooling. It is possible to strike a balance so that your home doesn’t feel unbearably warm, yet you spend less on cooling.

The average homeowner sets their thermostat somewhere in the range of 70°F to 75°F during the summer season. But the U.S. Department of Energy suggests a temperature of no lower than 78°F – anywhere from a 3° to 8° difference. If you don’t want to change the settings by that much all at once, you can set your thermostat a degree higher every few days over a period of weeks.

Utilize Fans

After setting your thermostat higher, you may be trying to help your home feel cooler like you’re used to. Ceiling fans and floor fans are just the answer to that problem. The airflow created by a fan can make your home feel a few degrees cooler without actually changing the temperature.

Ceiling fans are especially important for helping to move cool airflow around the room by strategically pushing air down. And remember, you can always adjust your thermostat back down a little if you really need to. You can strike a balance that works for your family between thermostat settings and fan utilization that keeps you cool and comfortable while also saving money.

Keep Up With Maintenance

Air filters need to be changed out every one to three months. Keeping a clean air filter in place goes a long way toward boosting AC efficiency. A clean air filter boosts airflow and helps your AC to cool more effectively without costing more. A dirty filter can block airflow and make your AC work harder.

Rinsing out the condensate drain line with vinegar is equally important. The condensate drain line is where humidity goes when it condenses down into droplets. Lowering humidity levels works much in the same way as fans.

It doesn’t change the temperature, but it can make your home feel more comfortable overall. A clogged condensate drain line can allow moisture to evaporate back into the air, increasing humidity levels and making your home feel warmer than it really is.
